Zelina Vega had been scratching and clawing her way in WWE. After coming up short on huge opportunities on multiple occasions, she finally claimed major championship gold. This came on the April 25th edition of SmackDown when she defeated Chelsea Green and won the WWE Women’s United States Championship.
In a recent interview with WrestleStar, the Puerto Rican star opened up about that game-changing night. Initially, Zelina Vega was under the impression that it would be a regular night on SmackDown. Moreover, her main focus was on the return of her real-life husband, Aleister Black, that night. However, WWE informed her an hour or two before the show that she would be winning the Star-Spangled Championship.
Vega said, “Probably about an hour or so, maybe two, before the show started. So it was pretty close. Like, we just, it was such a busy day, and I think that because I was so focused on my husband’s return, and I was just like, All right, we got this match, [we] wrestle a bunch, like, we kind of just started saying things back and forth that it didn’t actually come to, ‘Oh yeah, by the way, you’re winning’ until, like, maybe an hour or two before the show started. So yeah, it was a pretty crazy, crazy day.”
Zelina Vega had won accolades before in her WWE run. She became the first-ever Queen of the Ring tournament. Following that, Vega claimed the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships with Carmella. Despite that, Vega never claimed a singles title. Although she competed in various high-profile title matches against top stars like Liv Morgan and Rhea Ripley.
However, that changed when she pulled the upset over Chelsea Green a few months ago. While Zelina Vega managed to make a successful defense against Green, she has a new foe on the horizon. That is none other than the NXT standout Giulia. So it remains to be seen if Vega will fall to the wrath of the Beautiful Madness and lose her hard-earned title in WWE.
