WWE star Karrion Kross has had a recent resurgence with the company’s audience over the last six months. In a new interview, the former NXT champion suggested adding dark humor to his character has played a major role in changing many opinions about his potential on the main roster.
Most WWE fans know about how changes Vince McMahon forced upon Kross led to his main roster run being a huge failure. However, even when the new regime led by Paul “Triple H” Levesque brought him back three years ago, he still struggled to connect with fans using the version that made him a top star in NXT.
In an interview with The National this week, Kross explained why what made him a star in NXT didn’t work on the main roster. “If you’re quiet and stoic and you’re staring up at the lights a lot, there’s a disconnect for the audience,” he said.
It’s a fair point, and in NXT, he was a dominant force that rarely lost. That is far harder to do on the main roster when competing with the elite talent. However, that second failure forced Kross to make some adjustments to his character. And he believes adding dark humor he has always personally had has played a key role in why he has gained so much traction with the WWE audience over the last year. Despite having few matches.
“My whole family has it. It’s how we deal with stress, loss, and grief,” he said. “It’s all about entertaining people and putting a smile on their face.”
Kross is currently as popular as he has ever been in WWE. And his recent success has been rewarded as he will get a matchup with Sami Zayn on Saturday’s Night of Champions card.
