The Best WWE Superstars (Female and Male) Of 2018

The Best WWE Superstars (Female and Male) Of 2018

As 2018 winds to a close, one can’t help but be reflective over the past year in the WWE. The Universe has been subjected to some pretty incredible matches and programs, thanks to some pretty stellar superstar performances. Below are some the talent that blew it out of the water this year.

6. Brock Lesnar

Yes, you read right. I may not be the biggest Brock Lesnar fan, but I will give credit where credit is due. He offered up one of the biggest shockers in Wrestlemania history when he retained that Universal Championship at WM 34, and then surprised everyone again at the Greatest Royal Rumble by holding onto that title then. Sure, he dropped it at SummerSlam, but he would once again hold gold greatness at Crown Jewel. Lesnar is the superstar everyone thought was on his way out in 2018, but he continued to beat to his own WWE drum and dominate the RAW roster for most of the year. He also happens to be the only superstar to be a two-time Universal Champion; and with his first reign lasting 500+ days, he also happens to be the longest major title holder of the modern era.

5. Asuka

She had an explosive debut into the main roster in 2017, and carried that momentum for a bit of 2018. She was the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble winner, and continued her winning streak via the WWE’s Mixed Match Challenge with partner Miz, adding “Season 1 winners” to her WWE resume. Her amazing undefeated streak would end, thanks to Charlotte Flair, at Wrestlemania 34, and she suffered a bit of a lag for most of 2018 moving forward; however, it’s never about the setback, but the comeback. And what a comeback it was! Ending the year off closing the Tables, Ladders, and Chairs pay-per-view (PPV) with The Man Becky Lynch, and Flair, Asuka would not only perform a flawless triple threat match, but also win her first-ever main roster championship, heading into 2019 as SmackDown LIVE Women’s Champ.

4. Ronda Rousey

Monday Night RAW’s women’s division is all about Ronda Rousey. She had a huge WWE debut at the 2018 Royal Rumble, creating a mass medium frenzy and social media explosion. And it’s been nothing but climbing up that WWE ladder since: she’s RAW women’s champ, she’s undefeated, and while her promo skills were shaking at the beginning, Rousey has consistently improved her mic work and in-ring performance, making her one of the most entertaining superstars on either brand right now.

3. Seth Rollins

Where does one even begin when it comes to Monday Night Rollins? From his explosive return to singles action in February, where he ensured his Elimination Chamber spot by competing against Finn Balor, Bray Wyatt, Matt Hardy, and Apollo Crews in a fatal five-way bout; Rollins would move on to participate in a gauntlet match during the February 19th episode of Monday Night RAW where would become the superstar with the longest performance in a Red-brand match, defeating both Roman Reigns and John Cena (back to back), competing for one hour and five minutes. Further, he would score the RAW tag team championships twice this year (with two different partners), as well as become Intercontinental Champion twice two, becoming 18th Grand Slam Champion and the 29th Triple Crown Champ, respectively. There’s probably more Rollins has done this year, but this article doesn’t have the space for it.

2. Becky Lynch

She’s The Man alright; however, if anyone told me this time last year that there was a chance that Becky Lynch could headline the next Wrestlemania, I would’ve laughed in their face. And not because I didn’t believe in Becks or adore her character through and through; it just never seemed possible 12 months ago; she was popular, but standing in the likes of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. Oh, how times have changed! Becky Lynch’s new-found popularity, and momentum with the fans, is somewhat reminiscent of Daniel Bryan during his Yes! Movement, circa 2013, and she consistently is referred to as the “Stone Cold” of the women’s division. Still, this year we saw her gain a Women’s Champion title win, merchandising sales hit the roof, with everyone hanging on her every tweet, and the rest of the sporting world watching her; simply put, The Man has dominated the last portion of 2018. So, she’s no longer women’s champ, but this blow may offer her a big opportunity with a huge PPV lingering in the shadows. Could Becks score a Royal Rumble win and move on to close WM 35 with Ronda Rousey? The latter seems so much better for her career than an extended championship reign, don’t it?

1. Daniel Bryan

Speaking of DB, as if coming back from what seemed like a career-ending injury wasn’t enough this year; Bryan’s return to the WWE has been nothing short of phenomenal in 2018. He returned to in-ring action at Wrestlemania 34, and would move on to make history with his record-breaking performance of one hour and 16 minutes during the Greatest Royal Rumble. He didn’t win that match, but scored a lot of “wins” throughout the year sharing incredible programs with Big Cass, The Miz, and AJ Styles. What’s more astounding? Over-the-top babyface Bryan, one of the most-popular superstars in WWE history turned at the end of the year, becoming the biggest heel on the SmackDown roster right now, and WWE World Heavyweight Champion in the process!
