Can Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins Save RAW?

Dear WWE Creative,

It’s no secret: Monday Night RAW is failing right now. The Red brand is plagued with injuries; far too long at three hours; a part-time Universal Champion; struggling creatively, with no end in sight. With flutters of hope in the women’s division, led by Ronda Rousey, the show may have some highlight, yet continues to disappoint.

Having said that, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, with a feud that centers around two former best friends who have a history rich in comradery and rivalry intertwined.

The last time these two were involved in a program, the roles were reverse: Seth Rollins turned on The Shield, jumped on the Authority bandwagon, was the heel in storyline, with an undertone of corporate conspiracy. It was personal, with two talents who continually give it their all when it comes to matches and promos. This time around, it is just as personal, yet elevated. Dean Ambrose turned on Seth Rollins on a night filled with emotion; a night where real-life crossed over into WWE programming. And while some fans felt that Ambrose’s betrayal was a bit much, considering Roman Reigns’ announcement literally had taken place mere hours earlier, in many ways, it added fuel to the fire; a layer to this story that kept people watching and talking about it on social media.

To add to RAW’s struggles, the WWE Universe is already entering a lull period in programming. It’s the end of the year and as holidays approach, the WWE tends to wind down programs and start to place teasers for coming storylines in the new year. On the cusp of Road to Wrestlemania season and the 2019 Royal Rumble, it won’t be long before stories start to form around the WWE’s annual flagship event.

What makes the Rollins/Ambrose feud so appealing? The talents themselves, the history between these two, and their chemistry. They can play the best of friends and feed off each other in the ring, yet use that same interaction when it comes to battling each other at opposite sides of the ring. It’s been a while since Ambrose has played a heel character and this is the first time he’s doing so as a single competitor on the main roster, and Ambrose is owning the role. It’s almost as if heel Dean had been brewing inside the competitor for far too long and it’s finally exploded in marvel for all to see.

At the end of the day a good program is a mix of many things: two talents equaling working hard to make things work; a perfect story crafted and built by Creative; added with fan engagement. Seth Rollins versus Dean Ambrose encompasses all the factors, and just may be the storyline that saves Monday Night RAW, as fans struggle for a solid reason to tune in.

Me.
