With some time to spare until we have live fights again, we are going to take a look back at each division in the UFC during the past decade.
Up first is the big boys: the heavyweight division.
Stipe Miocic is the current champion, working on his second reign atop the weight class. Miocic, of course, won the title with a victory over Daniel Cormier last year at UFC 241.
Stipe Miocic
As mentioned, Stipe Miocic won the gold with a victory over Daniel Cormier at UFC 241 in Anaheim, California on August 17, 2019. His reign currently stands at over 230 days.
Miocic has yet to defend the belt, though, due to both injury, timing and the coronavirus.
The first title for Miocic came in May 14, 2016 at UFC 198 in Brazil when he stunned Fabricio Werdum.
Miocic would defeat three champions, setting the division record with three defenses over Alistair Overeem, Junior dos Santos and Francis Ngannou. His total run spanned 785 days.
He is expected to face Cormier for a third time.
Daniel Cormier
The first heavyweight title for Daniel Cormier came at UFC 226 when he finished Stipe Miocic on July 7, 2018. On that night, Cormier became a two-division champion, as he also held the light heavyweight title.
Cormier would make one successful title defense, besting Derrick Lewis. His run was marked at 407 total days.
Fabricio Werdum
Fabricio Werdum’s time included the interim title before it became the unified belt.
Werdum first captured the interim championship at UFC 180 in Mexico City on June 14. He became the unified champion during the run, which consisted of 336 days.
Cain Velasquez
A two-time heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez won his first title in October 23, 2010 at UFC 121 when eh finished Shane Carwin. His reign would last for 385 days before losing to Junior dos Santos.
Velasquez claimed the title a second time at UFC 155 on December 29, 2012 by avenging the loss to dos Santos. He would hold the title for 896 days with defenses over Antonio Silva and dos Santos.
Junior Dos Santos
In the first FOX event for UFC, Junior dos Santos stunned Cain Velasquez on November 12, 2011, winning the title.
Dos Santos would hold the belt for 413 total days, earning a defense over Frank Mir.
Shane Carwin
It was an interesting time for the UFC in the early part of the decade. Shane Carwin won the interim title when he topped Frank Mir on March 27, 2010 at UFC 111.
Carwin would fall to Brock Lesnar in a unification match at UFC 116 on July 3, 2010.
Brock Lesnar
At the start of 2010, Brock Lesnar was the man in the UFC’s heavyweight division.
Lesnar first won the title in 2008 with a victory over Randy Couture. He would defend it in 2009 by unifying the belts over Frank Mir, and again earning a defense in 2010 before falling to Cain Velasquez.
