UFC In The 2010s: Looking Back At Flyweight Division

Demetrious Johnson

When you talk about the UFC flyweight division, it starts and ends with Demetrious Johnson.

The first-ever champion in the division, “Mighty Mouse” made a record 11 title defenses from 2012 until 2018.

His title run spanned 2,142 days and included wins over some of the best of the best in the flyweight ranks.

That all came to a crashing halt when Henry Cejudo bested him at UFC 227.

Currently, the title remains vacant. A bout was planned between Deiveson Figueiredo and Joseph Benavidez was set for earlier this year.

Figueiredo came in over-weight for the bout, and was ineligible to win the title. He went on to win the match via second round TKO, but the title remains vacant.

It is likely the two are paired up again sometime later this year to crown a champion.

Henry Cejudo

At UFC 227 in Los Angeles on August 4, 2018, Henry Cejudo ended the incredible almost six-year run of Demetrious Johnson at flyweight.

Cejudo, who would go on to win the bantamweight belt as well, earned a victory over “Mighty Mouse.” He made a title defense in 2019, besting TJ Dillashaw.

After holding both titles, Cejudo decided to relinquish the flyweight belt and focus his attention on the bantamweight division.

Demetrious Johnson

The undisputed flyweight king in mixed martial arts, Demetrious Johnson made the division.

“Mighty Mouse” won the title over Joseph Benavidez at UFC 152 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on September 22, 2012. The bout served as the finals of a tournament.

Johnson would make his first title defense in 2013 over John Dodson, following that up with wins over John Moraga, Benavidez, Ali Bagautinov, Chris Cariaso, Kyoji Horiguchi, Dodson, Cejudo, Tim Elliott, Wilson Reis and Ray Borg.

After the loss to Cejudo, Johnson was traded to ONE Championship for Ben Askren. He is currently on his way to competing for the title in that promotion after winning a grand prix in ONE last year.
